The URBANITE project strengthens the integration of data into mobility planning. The project involves co-designing a mobility data platform with the City of Helsinki, facilitating cooperation between mobility and urban planners, residents and other parties interested in mobility data and information, and improving their opportunities for using new kinds of data-oriented technologies. This will also strengthen the development of the mobility ecosystem.

Objective

The objective of the project is to strengthen the mobility ecosystem from the perspective of data and information. In practice, this means transferring data to one place, increasing the self-reliance of the City in respect to mobility data and strengthening cooperation between interest groups. The URBANITE project focuses particularly on the Jätkäsaari area, producing new analysis tools to support mobility planning in Jätkäsaari.

Duration, partners and funding

• The project will run from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2023.
• The URBANITE project is coordinated by the Spanish TECNALIA. URBANITE’s project consortium is European, consisting of eleven partners from six different countries: the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Germany, Slovenia and Finland.
• The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme. The project has a total budget of EUR 3,953,582, of which Forum Virium Helsinki’s share is EUR 300,000.

The role of Forum Virium Helsinki

Forum Virium Helsinki is responsible for the Jätkäsaari pilot. The objective is to facilitate the building of a functional ecosystem for mobility data. In practice, this means the commissioning and development of the City’s mobility data platform, the development of skills and the consolidation of cooperation between operators. In addition to this, the aim is to experiment with the use of disruptive technologies as part of the mobility data platform. Another objective is the reduction of traffic congestion in Jätkäsaari.

Benefits for Helsinki

The URBANITE project strengthens the building of Helsinki’s mobility ecosystem, supports the development of a mobility data platform and the co-development of virtual space mobility and provides opportunities to learn from international partners in the field of mobility.
