The Synergy project creates a European-wide Big Data platform for processing and utilising electricity domain data

Artikkelikuva: Project introduction

The Synergy project revolves around digitalisation and the more precise utilisation of data related to electrical networks. Smart and optimised electricity networks help improve both energy efficiency and the operation of the networks. Furthermore, the increased information flow between different parties in the market will enable the establishment of new business models and operators in the electricity market.

Objective

The Synergy project involves creating a European-wide, AI-based big data platform architecture for processing and utilising primary and secondary electricity domain data. This data platform will serve as a marketplace (Energy as a Service), with the help of which energy sector operators will be able to utilise new kinds of and more precise data in their operations. This will improve the operation of electricity networks throughout the entire value chain. The objectives of the project include making electricity networks more effective through the utilisation of data and making energy consumption smarter.

Duration, funding, partners

  • Project duration: 1 January 2020 – 31 December 2023
  • Funding: Total budget approximately 12.7 million euros, total funding 9.9 million euros.
  • Coordinator: ETRA
  • Consortium: 24 partners from nine EU countries
  • Partners: ETRA, Geco Global, Caverion, CIRCE, Ponikve eko otok KrK, Forum Virium Helsinki, Haustechnik Güssing, HEDNO, Suite5, UBITECH, the European Centre for Renewable Energy Güssing, Elin Verd, ICCS, Maggioli S.p.A, Grupo Cobra, Končar Ket, Energy Service Ltd, KnowledgeBiz, Cuerva, Urbener, Fysiko Aerio, IPTO, the University of Cyprus, VTT.

The role of Forum Virium Helsinki

Forum Virium Helsinki will operate in the project with Finnish demo partner Caverion. The pilots to be carried out in Finland involve collecting data related to properties from numerous sources. The pilots will focus on utilising data to monitor and optimise the energy efficiency of buildings, support cities’ Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans (SECAP), help design and renovate properties in an energy-efficient manner and optimise the energy consumption of properties in real time.

Project benefits for Helsinki

The work carried out in the Synergy project supports the realisation of cities’ Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans, which in Finland mean the City of Helsinki’s Carbon-neutral Helsinki 2035 objectives. The analysis to be complied out of the numerous datasets of the project’s pilots will help Helsinki carry out energy-efficient urban planning towards a carbon-neutral future. Urban planning will be carried out utilising VTT’s CityTune software.
