We collaborated with Flow Analytics on a 2023 experiment measuring the appeal of Esplanadi, using Flow Analytics’ LiDAR sensors to verify the numbers of vehicle traffic, pedestrians and cyclists. We asked Jari Erämaa, the company’s Product Manager, how the collaboration went and what the company is up to now.

1. How would you describe your operations?

“Flow Analytics is both a startup and a product brand of AGC Automotive Europe. AGC is a 120-year-old Japanese conglomerate that manufactures one-third of the world’s car windows, including windshields compatible with LiDARs. This gives us strong relationships with the LiDAR industry.”

“Flow Analytics specializes in the versatile analysis of human flows in urban environments. We provide GDPR-compliant, real-time data to help cities optimize urban planning and promote smoother, safer, and more sustainable mobility. We explore new measurement methods to improve urban traffic flow and safety, because what is not measured cannot be improved.”

“We specialize in LiDAR-based mobility measurement in urban environments. The method uses infrared lasers to calculate distances and create 3D point clouds. Artificial intelligence then identifies pedestrians, cyclists, and various vehicles, and provides the precise location data of the movers within seconds, which is stored for analysis. With LiDAR technology, we can track movers anonymously, without collecting personal data. This opens up new possibilities for designing safer and more pleasant urban environments.”

2. What kind of collaboration have you had with Forum Virium Helsinki?

“Our first joint project—measuring traffic with LiDARs on Esplanadi—was groundbreaking and significant for our startup’s development! In the 2023 experiment on Helsinki’s North Esplanadi, a traffic lane was closed and replaced with terraces, while on South Esplanadi, a lane was reserved for cyclists.”

“We conducted LiDAR measurements in collaboration with Forum Virium Helsinki and the City of Helsinki. In a one-hectare area, we monitored traffic congestion, cyclists’ and pedestrians’ route choices, and the parking of e-scooters and bicycles as part of the Mobility Lab Helsinki project.”

“The collaboration provided us with an excellent opportunity to test new approaches and create references. Overall, the collaboration was efficient and fast.”

3. How did the collaboration go and what insights were gained?

“The collaboration provided us with an excellent opportunity to test new approaches and create references. Overall, the collaboration was efficient and fast. We also learned new things from challenges, such as data transfer solutions.”

“Forum Virium Helsinki handled most of the physical arrangements for the LiDAR experiment, including securing electricity, permits, and physical installation. Project Manager Jussi Knuuttila’s project management was excellent and the collaboration was easy and smooth.”

“Equally important was the media visibility we received through Forum Virium and the contribution of communications expert Paula Kultanen to the project. The Helsingin Sanomat article generated numerous contacts and increased public awareness of our work.”

4. How are things going for you now and what are your plans for the future?

“We are currently developing a portable LiDAR unit for short-term measurements, for example, at intersections. This unit is more affordable, quicker to install, and battery-powered, eliminating the need for cranes and electricians. It should be operational around March.”

“We are also involved in a project at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, where we are measuring passenger movement in the departure hall and analyzing passenger flow, waiting times, and passenger guidance with LiDAR for a year-long period. The People Flow consortium includes, in addition to us, the City of Helsinki, the University of Helsinki, the University of Lapland, Kone, Granlund, Haltia, and Metatavu.”

“Additionally, we are planning a rapid experiment in Oulu at a pedestrian crossing where there have been numerous near-misses. This experiment, conducted with the City of Oulu and Business Oulu, aims to determine whether the accidents and near-misses are isolated incidents or if traffic lights or other measures are needed.”

5. How would you describe your responsibility actions?

“We strive to improve traffic statistics, enhance cycling safety, and explore carpooling opportunities to reduce commuting emissions. Forum Virium contributes by promoting the adoption of digitalization in Helsinki, making measurement work easier and smoother.”
