Forum Virium Helsinki @ PICNIC Amsterdam 2011

World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 and Forum Virium Helsinki join forces to create open data content for PICNIC 2011 Amsterdam. The main theme for our interactive studio and workshop at the festival, organized between 14 to 16 September 2011, is data visualisation.

At the interactive studio lounge visitors can check out Helsinki-Amsterdam data visualisations made out of city statistics by the We Love Open Data and Infodesign teams, and compare Helsinki-Amsterdam neighborhood similarities. Studio guests can pimp-their-neighborhood with data visualisation to find out what data manipulation can do. The studio is also an information point for the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012.

We will also host an open data workshop session at PICNIC, which gives you insight on data visualization and data literacy. The two-hour workshop will be hosted by Forum Virium Helsinki CEO Mr. Jarmo Eskelinen, with an introduction by the Infodesign team. The possibilities and challenges of open public data will be discussed at PICNIC’S Open Data Unconference, where Forum Virium Helsinki and World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 will also be present.

PICNIC OPEN DATA KITCHEN IDEA CHALLENGE!

We try to understand our city. Every day we make hundreds of decisions based on what we know. Can you recognize a moments in your life when knowing something new, in that situation, would make a difference? Describe what would you need to know about your home city, or any city you travel to, and submit it as a question to PICNIC 2011 Open Data Kitchen idea challenge. The challenge is open on September 5 – 15.

We will pick five most interesting questions and during the next three weeks after PICNIC find out if the data needed for answering your question could be made available as open data in the cities who join this challenge. Helsinki from Finland is already in and there are more to come. For the chosen questions we will find the person who is in a position to answer if the data can be opened. We will go and interview them and publish the answers here as videos. The submitters of the chosen questions will also get a Nokia N8 device each as a reward.
