Apps4Finland, organized now for the fifth time, is an open data innovation contest. The main organizers are The Finnish Association for Online Democracy and Forum Virium Helsinki. This year the competition has taken important steps to become a support network of creativity and problem solving.

Over the years, the Apps4Finland competition has become the National Open Data Championship; participating and succeeding in it is a matter of honor for professionals and enthusiasts alike. This year we wanted to encourage the contestants not just to do something with open data, but also to have a direct impact on the society and people’s daily lives. We also wanted to boost community-driven problem solving and give systematic support for participants in their efforts.

The competition features four main categories: Inspire, Decipher, Impact and Enable. In addition to these, the competitors could also solve pre-determined challenges prepared in collaboration with the funding organizations.

The competition is now closed and all the entries have been collected. The jury will start its work on November 11th and the public voting period commences on November 8th. The president of the jury is Otso Kivekäs, the chairman of the Department of information technology of the City of Helsinki. Fame and glory for the winners will be delivered in the awards gala in Helsinki on December 3rd.
