Jätkäsaari Mobility Lab – Smart mobility testbed in Helsinki

Jätkäsaari Mobility Lab was an umbrella for various smart mobility projects in Helsinki and an innovation platform developed in the Jätkäsaari area.

Jätkäsaari Mobility Lab brought together companies, research organisations, city departments and residents to co-create smart mobility. The core activities of the project included development of smart infrastructure, piloting and experimentation, and co-creation with variety of stakeholders.

Objective

The goal of the project was to bring together existing smart mobility development, enable growth of the mobility ecosystem and to promote creation of new jobs and businesses.

Partners, duration and budget

  • Jätkäsaari Mobility Lab was a collaboration between the City of Helsinki and Forum Virium Helsinki, Helsinki Business Hub, Port of Helsinki, Helsinki Region Transport and Helsinki City Transport, without forgetting all the companies and research institutes.
  • The project was coordinated by the Economic Development Division of the City of Helsinki.
  • Forum Virium Helsinki acted as a coordinating partner.
  • The project was funded by the innovation funds of the City of Helsinki and its duration was 2019-2021.

The role of Forum Virium Helsinki

Forum Virium’s main responsibility in the project was agile piloting programme and facilitating co-creation with the residents and other stakeholders.

The main results of the project

The project made Länsisatama and especially Jätkäsaari internationally known and attractive areas for piloting smart mobility services. Jätkäsaari Mobility Lab provided companies with wide-ranging support in piloting new innovations, including facilitation of the collaboration among stakeholders and help with equipment installations, permits and regulations, coordination of pilots, resident co-operation and communications.

Jätkäsaari Mobility Lab was an intersection where companies and the representatives of the City of Helsinki could meet and discuss with each other. The project informed companies about the City’s expectations and priorities for the new solutions, and provided the City of Helsinki with information on the solutions available in the market, including the opportunities they offered and requirements and limitations they had.

In 2022-2024, the Mobility Lab Helsinki project continued developing the urban testbed for smart mobility. The project particularly focuses on the efficient utilisation of mobility data and digital twins in the development of new innovations.

Project benefits for Helsinki

Jätkäsaari Mobility Lab supported piloting new smart mobility technologies, services and solutions in Helsinki. It had a major role in 25 pilots carried out during the project. Ten of these were implemented through own procurement. There were five large-scale pilots in the project. The project provided domestic and international companies with references. According to the survey made among the companies, the companies felt that they had received significant benefits from the project.
