The Smart City challenge is to come up with a functioning application that leverages Open Data in an innovative and diverse way. The City of Helsinki is a pioneer and leader in opening its data repositories. Now the city wants to encourage developers to come up with new kinds of applications, visualizations and dashboards using Open Data – for example, shedding light on
- What is taking place in Helsinki or how things are evolving.
- Mobile applications that help tourist find interesting locations and events
- Allowing citizens to take part in the public decision-making process
How does the cloud play into this? There are many data sets available over at HRI but in most cases you’ll need to manipulate and host the data yourself for the most effective use. This data can be stored and analyzed on Microsoft Azure with the Machine Learning capabilities of Azure. You could for example combine a data set that contains traffic information with a data set about traffic accidents at a certain point in time. Combine these two data sets on Azure and identify which parts of the road are most dangerous. This information can then be more closely inspected to understand why time crosswalk or part of the road is especially dangerous.
You can look at the case example from CGI and the Helsinki Region Transport and learn more about Azure Machine Learning in this Cloud Cover episode.
