The ‘Carbon neutral drone service solutions in Southern Finland’ project is piloting and promoting carbon neutral drone services. At the same time, the project also want to develop new business models for the needs of various industries. If you run a drone business, contact us!

Objective

The objective of the ‘Carbon neutral drone service solutions in Southern Finland’ project is to pilot and promote carbon neutral and emissions-free drone services for the purposes of logistics, remote security, and environmental control, and develop them into new forms of business to replace combustion engine forms of mobility and transport.

The project develops innovative drone service solutions with the help of co-creation workshops and new operating methods that put less of a strain on the environment to promote carbon neutrality and the use of drones in new applications.

Along with logistics solutions, the project tests remote monitoring and security solutions as well as long-distance logistics transport. The aim is to complete long-distance test flights beyond the visual line of sight (BVLOS) and even carry out automatic flights, if possible.

The project supports the carbon neutral goals of the Uusimaa and Kymenlaakso areas. It is also part of the drone service development project family being implemented simultaneously in four areas (Uusimaa, Kymenlaakso, North Ostrobothnia, Lapland) in the form of three project entities.

Duration, partners and funding

  • Project duration: 1 September 2019–31 December 2021
  • Budget: 789,000 euros. Funded by the European Union, ERDF.
  • Partners: the project partners of Forum Virium Helsinki include South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences Xamk and Posintra Oy, a development company operating in Eastern Uusimaa. Xamk’s role is mainly to be an expert in logistics, drone operations and the Kymenlaakso area. Cooperation with Posintra facilitates the use of the Porvoo area as an experimenting platform in connection with long-distance pilot flights that take off in Helsinki.

The role of Forum Virium Helsinki

The role of Forum Virium Helsinki is to coordinate and manage the project and to organise the pilots in its own area. Forum Virium Helsinki also operates as an active facilitator between the larger areas in the drone project family.

Project benefits for Helsinki

Experiments and pilots are used to identify carbon neutral alternatives to various transport and mobility needs and to map the requirements the drone business has in terms of urban development. It is important to have the City on board, actively promoting and directing the operations, when developing operations that breed new fields of business.

Do you have a drone business? Join our pilot project!

We need companies that produce or want to produce RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) services to join our project to test drive carbon neutral drone services with us. We offer an opportunity to pilot your service in a genuine urban environment together with residents. You will also have the chance to brainstorm new business models in the field of drones.
