Artikkelikuva: Project introduction

B.Green project researched new solutions for green infrastructure and associated digital tools for supporting cityplanning. B.Green created new procedures and applications in the city planning context to implement Green Infrastructure solutions widely.

Goals

Green infrastructure solutions can support cities in reaching climate change adaptation and mitigation goals. They influence the value of properties, wellbeing of residents, and they also ensure the biodiversity of urban ecosystems.

The goal of the project was to find new green infrastructure solutions suitable for northern climate and to map out digital tools that allow planning and implementation of these solutions within the urban planning context. An important goal was also to communicate the benefits of participatory urban planning and green infrastructure to all levels of stakeholders, including planners, decision-makers and residents.

Duration, partners and funding

The duration of the project was from 1.2.2020 to 31.12.2022.
B.Green project was coordinated by Forum Virium Helsinki. The project partners were City of Helsinki, City of Tallinn, and the Stockholm Environment Institute Tallinn Center (SEI Tallinn).

The project was funded by the Interreg Central Baltic Programme. Interreg Central Baltic funds international development projects between Estonia, Finland, Latvia and Sweden. The funding stake in the project of Forum Virium Helsinki was 590 000 €. The budget of the whole project was 1 302 618 €.

The role of Forum Virium Helsinki

Forum Virium Helsinki coordinated the project and guided to meet the defined goals. In order to meet the project goals, it was essential to search and test new digital tools and solutions that could support the planning of green infrastructure already in the early phase of urban planning as the use of digital tools can ease the entry of participation and understanding of climate and carbon neutrality goals.

Forum Virium Helsinki brought collaborators and stakeholders together to co-create innovative solutions and facilitated piloting in the Kalasatama area. Agile experiments in the thematic scope of B.Green were procured from companies in 2021-2022.

Benefits to the City of Helsinki

Through the B.Green project, the City of Helsinki received new understanding of alternatives for green infrastructure within the frame of urban planning. The project provided an opportunity to experiment with novel digital tools to help implement green infrastructure solutions in the early phase of urban planning processes. Forum Virium Helsinki collaborated closely with the Urban Environment Division’s Länsisatama-Kalasatama team as well as Management of climate and environmental issues.
