Med-IREN-project promotes the implementation of nature-based solutions

Artikkelikuva: Project introduction

The goal of the Med-IREN project is to demonstrate how nature-based solutions can protect Europe’s critical infrastructure from the effects of climate change and extreme weather events.

Objective

The goal of the Med-IREN project is to explore and verify the impact of nature-based solutions in adapting to climate change and mitigating extreme weather events. The project has a total of 9 demonstration and replicator areas in the Mediterranean region and around Europe. In Helsinki (replicator), the goals of the project are mainly related to nature-based solutions connected to the built environment and their effect, especially in mitigating heat waves and the urban heat island phenomenon.

Duration, partners, funding and total budget

  • 1.10.2024–30.9.2028
  • The project is funded by the European Union (Horizon). The total budget of the project is 11 466 060 euros, of which Forum Virium Helsinki’s share is 423 750 euros.
  • 31 European partners in total, the project is coordinated by Demokritos (National Center For Scientific Research, Greece). The Finnish partners are Forum Virium Helsinki and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.

The role of Forum Virium Helsinki

  • Forum Virium Helsinki is responsible for coordinating the demonstration in the Helsinki area.
  • Involvement of stakeholders and evaluation/measurement of the effects of nature-based solutions.
  • Development of tools based on the digital twin, based on and taking into account existing and new data sources.

Responsibility

The project will help the city to take a more proactive approach to climate change adaptation and mitigation. In particular, the project supports the city of Helsinki in achieving the carbon neutrality target.

Benefits for Helsinki

  • The project produces new information about the benefits of nature-based solutions and new digital tools to support the implementation of the solutions.
  • The results of the project can be used to support decision-making related to climate change adaptation and in the development of the city’s digital twin.
  • The city of Helsinki receives information about which areas are particularly vulnerable to urban heat islands.
