Handbook for Cities: How to Utilise Novel Green Infrastructure Solutions

Artikkelikuva: Handbook for Cities: How to Utilise Novel Green Infrastructure Solutions

The handbook compiles three years of lessons learned on greening the city through innovative means. The publication is intended especially for city and municipal employees, such as urban planners, green sector experts, procurement specialists, and environmental professionals.

In the intensifying urban environment, nature-based solutions are needed for adapting to climate change, increasing biodiversity, and improving the well-being of city residents. In the joint PilotGreen project of Forum Virium Helsinki, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, and LAB University of Applied Sciences, new green infrastructure solutions have been developed and piloted together with companies, cities, and residents in 2023–2025. Based on the project’s experiences and know-how, a guide has now been compiled to support the piloting of innovative green solutions.

The publication is intended especially for professionals in cities and municipalities, such as urban planners, green sector experts, procurement specialists, and environmental professionals. Additionally, companies, development organisations, and other procurers of green infrastructure solutions will benefit from it. By reading the handbook, the target group gains concrete tools, examples, and operating models that help them start experiments, implement them successfully, and scale the best solutions into permanent practices. The guide provides information on new green infrastructure solutions, their procurement, and the utilisation of the rapid experimentation model. Furthermore, it provides the basis for assessing the solutions’ impacts from the perspective of, for example, biodiversity, stormwater management, cooling effects, and health benefits.
