Open Forum – Does open data generate you business?

The next Open forum event of Forum Virium Helsinki is organized on 1 October 2010. The theme of the event is open data. What kind of business opportunities it does bring you – if any?

In Finland, public sector organizations produce a great deal of public data. It is considered that opening up this data will promote research and development activities, increase transparency and efficiency, plus engage citizens. Also, it is hoped that open data would create new business opportunities through better services. But what does this actually mean for companies? Can open data help them to develop their business and create new services?

Open data is also topical in the Finnish administration. There are several ministry-level working groups that are dealing with the subject. Helsinki Metropolitan area also has its own development project Helsinki REgion Infoshare looking for ways to open up the region’s statistical data sources in practice.

In short, the first steps are now being taken to open up data sources. For companies and organizations the important question to ponds is how open data can be utilized for business.

Our Open Forum session asks the following: How can open data help companies to create and develop new business and services?
