UrbanSense 5G Edge Computing Challenge
Come and pilot your innovative edge computing solution in a real-world environment. Does your company have data and an idea that you’d like to pilot on an edge computing platform? Now you have an opportunity to test it out in a real-life environment and receive sparring for the further development of your idea.
The Edge Computing Challenge will procure multiple experiments with a total value of EUR 12,000 divided between participants. The aim is to find three experiments or divide the budget based on the decision of the judges’ panel. The progress of the experiments is reported in three phases. The competition is aimed at both companies and students.

The Edge Computing Challenge
Develop and test the market with an innovative use case utilising edge computing technology on the mobile telephone network.
Your solution can be a prototype, a demo, and idea or a concept that is documented comprehensively enough to enable further development with the pilot offering. The experiments can make use of data from different sources. How does your solution contribute to the development of new smart city services? What might we learn during the experiment?
The pilot platform is ideal for real-time streaming, such as live video, audio and text streaming. The platform also processes IoT data and virtual XR and AR/VR data.
Which service does your edge computing service tackle?
- The service requires low network latency to function properly.
- The service helps achieve significant cost-savings by processing data locally instead of uploading it elsewhere (to the cloud) for centralised processing.
- The service processes sensitive data locally and produces anonymous data that can be stored and further refined.
- The service supports a local function that can be carried out independently without a constant network connection.

Telia 5G services
The Challenge offers participants an opportunity to develop their solution on a 5G network.
The following are considered advantages:
- The proposed solution utilises the challenge offering.
- The proposed solution offers new services to the residents of Helsinki or the City of Helsinki.
- The proposed solution utilises the features of the edge computing platform.
We appreciate solutions with high novelty value and impact. Solutions with high novelty value also include proposals that utilise existing solutions in new ways.

The open call’s judges’ panel will evaluate proposed solutions based on the following criteria:
- the proposed solution’s applicability to the challenge
- the innovativeness/novelty value of the proposed solution
- good usability and customer-oriented implementation
- good business potential and scalability.
The judges have the right to emphasise the evaluation criteria as they see fit, while maintaining intercomparability.
Rights
The pilot programme involves procuring experiments, not the technology or other assets, etc. that make them possible.
As such, the conductor of the experiment shall retain all intellectual property rights, etc. related to the experiment.
The challenge organiser reserves the right to change the rules of the challenge by announcing the changes on the challenge website.
