How the City of Helsinki benefits from the Smart City projects of Forum Virium Helsinki

More than half of the world’s population lives in cities, and this number is constantly growing. In Finland, approximately 100,000 people will move to the Helsinki Metropolitan Area in the coming 10 years. At the same time, technology is being linked to urban structures, and climate change requires inventive actions. Rapid and low-carbon growth of Helsinki and thousands of other cities in the world brings on new challenges – but also tremendous opportunities.

Millions of euros of development funds for Helsinki

We are developing future urban solutions for Helsinki in the Smart City projects. They support the data and technology competences of the City of Helsinki and help the City achieve its carbon neutrality goals. The projects are typically funded by the European Union and the City of Helsinki. The projects are often prepared in co-operation with the City’s Divisions, which helps us create solutions directly for the City’s needs. Forum Virium’s projects bring millions of euros of development funds from the European Union to Helsinki every year. We are one of Finland’s most efficient users of innovation funding.

Companies in Helsinki thrive through innovation

Several companies have boosted their development and grown more international with the help of our projects. This means more tax income and well-being for the City of Helsinki. For example, the robotic car company Sensible 4 was born as a result of one of our development projects. Similarly, MaaS Global, known for the Whim application, worked with us to develop their Mobility as a Service concept in their early days.

Learning about smart cities, data and media coverage

The lessons and benefits from the projects are transferred to the City, companies and other partners. For example, the open data of the City of Helsinki started in a Forum Virium development project. Thanks to Forum Virium, agile pilots as a method of urban development have spread throughout the City organisation. The digitalisation of the City’s services is rapid. The housing and transport solutions in Smart Kalasatama and Jätkäsaari ensure immense media coverage for Helsinki every year, both in Finland and abroad.
